A New Balance

 Life is always about balancing the things we have to do. Today I am embarking on a new journey as a Teachers Assistant in Pre-K at a local elementary school. However, I do not desire quitting this blog nor any of my crafts. And so, I must hunt for that balance. It is currently 4:30 as I am writing this. I woke early with my mind full of thoughts on how to balance and keep myself healthy. Then I remembered one of the greatest things about tatting…It’s portable. 

I can literally tat anywhere. All I have to do is have a loaded shuttle (or two) with me at all times. Since most of my pants have pockets and I’ll have my work bag, this should be no problem because of fact number two. Tatting shuttles are small. With the exception of my Tatsy shuttles most of my shuttles are no longer than 2 1/2 inches in length. 

So, when my alarm goes off at 7 am, I will load up two shuttles to keep with me. And I can go to work, have my tatting and maintain that balance which eluded me upon waking. 

To say I am excited to begin this new journey would be an understatement. I really enjoy working with kids, and if the need to pay bills didn’t exist I’d be willing to do it for free.

Yes there are hard days when working with children, but that’s true of anything in life. Hard days happen at home, at work, at school but its how you address your challenges that shows your true strength. If you decide to ostrich (aka bury your head and ignore the hard situations) than that is your business, maybe you should ask for help. But, if you decide to Sherlock (aka find a solution that lets you overcome the hard situations) maybe you should try to help an Ostrich find their bravery. Every day is full of decisions and challenges. Tatting used to be one of my challenges. 

I will never cease to stress how long it took me to fully learn to tat. One year ladies and gentlemen. One year of struggling with technique and stitches. One year of wasting messed up project after messed up project. One year of flat refusing to give up. One year of feeling like a failure. But in the end, I conquered tatting and now it is one of the things I most enjoy in my free time. Don’t let hard times get you down, fight through them, the results are amazing.

Shuttle, Needle or Cro-Tat Hook?

 Monday’s post happening on Tuesday has thrown off my whole week. My humble apologies.  Today I want to discuss the three main tools for making the rings and chains of our tatted lace. I will start with the tool I know the least about.  Cro-tat Hooks look like a cross between a small tatting needle, a crochet hook and the tool used in latch hook designs. From what I’ve seen in videos you form the loops on the cro-tat tool exactly as you would a tatting needle for the rings only. Then to work the chains you use the tool as a normal crochet hook and make as many chains as your pattern tells you for the double stitches. However, you cannot add picots using this tool. Instead you have beautiful handmade lace that combines the looks of tatting and crochet. I’ve seen some finished works online for cro-tatting and it looks beautiful. What is Tatting?

      The short answer to today's question is hand made lace. But for myself and many other passionate tatters it is so much more! In her book, “Tatting Collage", Lindsay Rogers gives us a look into the history behind this art form. Her chapter "A Brief History of Tatting," tells her personal history with lace making as well as delving into the history behind this fascinating technique. Lindsay tells us " The origins of tatting are none too clear." but it seems to have "evolved from knotting, an ancient means of making decorations for clothes…The word ‘tatting’, however, did not appear in print until the mid-nineteenth century.” While Lindsay’s explanation is not one hundred percent able to clarify what tatting is, it gives us a glance into the age of this art form. Botched Patterns and Double Stitches

As promised I am going to explain double stitches today. But I'm also going to admit something... I still mess up. That's right, as long as I have been a crafter I've had to learn perfection is not probable. In the beginning if I made an error, I thought the project was ruined and cut it off and tossed it away. But its part of the process of learning. I've learned patience and toleranceby learning tatting. It truly is an art form that heals.  But first, my most recent bothced project.  I attempted a pattern I saw on YouTube once a while back. I think the lady's name is Gina Butler. I'm positive it's Gina...not so sure if Butler is correct. As you can see it is not perfect. And I'm okay with that. When I first started out though, this piece would have ended up in the garbage.
